Legal Separation

A legal separation is a proceeding to change the legal status of persons who are married. A final judgment of legal separation, as with a divorce, decides issues of property division, maintenance (support for a spouse), legal custody/placement, child support and other related topics.

A legal separation is quite similar to a divorce in most respects, expect that parties who request and obtain a decree of legal separation may not remarry. Wisconsin law regarding legal separation is set forth in Chapter 767 (see http://www.legis.state.wi.us/rsb/stats.html)
